Long Gone Nixon

Champion Long Gone Nixon is the only setter male in history to place in BOTH the North American Woodcock Futurity AND The Grand National Grouse Futurity (Nixon also placed in The International Cover Dog Futurity). Nixon’s decisive wins of the Bill Kearns Open Derby Classic and the White Mountain Open Derby Classic (both on wild birds) added luster to an already enviable record. “Nick has won on quail, grouse and woodcock! “Nixon” was born in May of 2000, so he was “giving up” a lot of age to his contemporaries, thus his wins were even more impressive. Nixon placed in all age stakes this spring, while still a derby!

Nixon is short coupled and very fancy moving, he points with great style. “Nick” is tri colored. He is a particularly strong bird finder, with wild birds being his strength. Nixon has a loving and very mellow demeanor. He does not bark! Nixon is a strong breeding dog with his pups looking very good at this point, with lots of color!

2x CH /2x RU CH Long Gone Nixon is out of the all time winner of grouse and woodcock championships in the history of grouse trialing, 8x CH / 4x RU CH Long Gone Agnes! At this writing Nicks mama and daddy (2009) have 18 championship titles between them!

Nixon placed in the first open shooting stake he ran in. He continues to win as an adult with wins on both wild and liberated birds. Nick placed in the prestigious Phill Fogg Open Shooting Dog Classic on Cape Cod this spring. He was awarded the coveted “Foss Throphy” for this win. This was very rewarding as it is the fourth generation of our dogs we have won this award with. 1977 Long Gone Stokely; 1990 Class Attack; 1994 Long Gone Bill; 2003 Long Gone Nixon. This is given to the dog the judges most would like to go hunting with. Nixons’ pups look very good with lots of natural pointing desire.

Recent news : As an Adult:” Ch Long Gone Nixon has won two Championship titles and two Runner Ups. Both open and amateur, on both wild and liberated birds. As a producer we are very happy with Nick’s offspring, from 2 x CH Grouse Ridge Spencer to all the letters and emails we get from satisfied hunters all over the country, on all types of game birds and terrain. The pups all are very classy and are real natural bird dogs. Call me here at the kennel in NH at 603-636-2959 for location of Nixon as we also move him around the country to make it easier and cheaper for people to breed to this multiple champion. As I write this, winter of 2010 Nixon will be at Rainbowe Kennels in Southern Ohio at 740-493-3419.

Click on “Nicks “ pedigree at the bottom of this page and you will see the decades of line breeding that has produced this classy young winner . Now you can get the blood of 8xCH Long Gone Agnes (she the all time winner AND producer of setter champions) and 5X CH Grouse Ridge Reroy.

Testimonials

Dear Lloyd, (12/6/12)

Just a short line to tell you how happy I am with my pup (from Indianapolis). She is doing great and did so right out of the box. I was shooting birds over the pup last season when she was only 6-9 months old. People here could not believe how advanced the dog was at such a young age. Though far from a completely finished dog, she is a pleasure in the field … she points, backs, does a fair job at retrieving (getting better all the time) and stays right with me all the time. She is not steady to wing & shot but neither is my old setter which means this is not in her future. I took her to Maine in October and we got to kill lots of grouse over her point … was worth a lot! I will attach a couple of photos … one of the pup on point last week and one of my grandson (10) and me in Maine. This was my grandson’s first grouse kill over a point (your pup).

I’m set for dogs right now but you will hear from me again when the time comes for a new puppy. Hope you and your family are well and expecting a wonderful holiday season!

Best wishes, Bob Hurst
Dear Lloyd and Kelly and Brian and Janet,

This is just a follow-up on Mac and Molly that came to us from you all via Maryanne and Buckeye dog haulers right after Christmas. Mac was whelped 6/17/11 and Molly, 10/4/11, both sired by LGN, but with different dams. The first part of 2012 we worked on obedience with Janet Harris of Sherborn, MA to good effect. In April they went to Brian Hays in Smithfield, RI – Chokebore Kennels at Addieville East, where Brian and his team (I emphasize team, as though Brian is the unequivocal leader, he has assembled a team of skilled, enthusiastic, collegial and committed group of co-workers, many of whom are professionals in their own right {Brian, Brian, Bill, Tony, Bob, Kyle, Gary, Francis, Tim, Gary who consistently apply the principles and drills set out by Brian} -I, the humble owner went down to Smithfield most weekends, so that the handler could be trained at the same time as the dogs. By late July Mac was steady to wing and shot, Molly staunch, but broke to the bird release and shot (women have their own agenda). We three came home October 1, and have been bird hunting at Markover in Danielson, CT X 2. Based on availability, we have shot over pheasants (chukars arrive next week) and bob-white. They both quarter beautifully, in good range. Both dogs are rock steady, for as long as five minutes. Mac has retrieved five pheasants and handled these rascal birds with aplomb. Molly has an equally good nose, steady on point, but as yet stands over the downed bird, but is hesitant to retrieve it. Neither dog retrieves the quail, and I think that this will be re-learned, as they were trained on quail, and taught not to grab them! All in all I couldn’t be more pleased, as their behavior and performance in the field is more like two – three year old setters than one year olds. As Brian Hays says: You can’t beat breeding plus training. They both certainly show in M&M.

With appreciation to you all.

Dear Lloyd and Kelly,

Just an update on Mac and Molly, who came to us right after Christmas from your kennels. Both settled in nicely and we kept them at home for four months, for socialization and yard training, utilizing Janet Harris for day training. Since April 1 (for Mac) and May 1 (for Molly), they have been with Brian Hays of Chokeboro Kennels in Smithfield, Rhode Island for bird and field work. i go down there weekends to work with the dogs under Brian’s supervision. I can report to you that both dogs make consistently solid points. Mac is steady to wing and shot, and Molly not far behind, despite being younger and with a month less training. This coming week, Mac will go off leash with collar back up (to which he has been conditioned, gently). These dogs are both delightful pets as well as hunters. They will stay with Brian until Sept 1, and clearly will be ready for the fall season. I said to Brian this morning how pleased i am with their progress, and he replied that, not to discount training, you can’t deny great breeding. These dogs, both sired by LGN, couldn’t look more differently: Mac is big -55 pounds with a classic long setter coat. Molly is small – 37 lbs with a short silky coat (much like JD, who also was sired by LGN). Just goes to show, i suppose, the significant influence of the dams. We are pleased to have benefited from your great breeding lines. I’ll write again in the fall.

Thanks,
Bill Daggett
Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know yet another compliment on your breeding’s. Two years ago I decided to get a pup out of Lone Gone Nixon and Darktown Strutter. I have been very happy with the dog and had sent you a pic of him and a litter mate of his out in North Dakota that you posted on your website. I now am sending a pic of him taking 1st place in his 2nd cover dog field trial open derby division here in Wisconsin. Also my hunting buddy Tim has a litter mate of Hank (Maisy May) and she has placed 3rd in two out of three of the trials she has been in. I attached a few pics and also a website to check out if you are interested. Once again we both have been extremely happy with our dogs and just wanted to say thanks! Thanks for your time!

Hey Lloyd,

Got a chance to see you and Dave Hughes grouse hunting yesterday with a couple of great dogs on YouTube. Good stuff! Too bad that the camera work was not exactly stellar but anyone could certainly get the idea. That LG Madison dog is something else! Just wanted to drop a line to say that my Nixon pup is doing great. I still have not done any formal training to date but she has a ton of natural ability and is already really good with points and backs and is trying to retrieve. She hunts a wonderful pattern and marks downed birds. She is a buzz-saw type dog that hits the cover full speed and is very active all around. I have been hunting her on grouse and preserve birds as well. The guys I hunt with think that she is a finished dog but I know better. She is a natural backing dog and will stop as far back as she can see the point .. sometimes 50 yards!

Hope you are doing well. Season about over here and really sorry because the puppy has made this year so much fun.

Best wishes, Bob Hurst
Hi Lloyd, the partridge are hot and heavy almost everywhere we go , the woodcock have seemed to drop off must be migrating. Paige has been up 4 or 5 times hunting with that little female out of Nixon and her bitch, that dog is a real bird finder and is a pleasure to hunt over, here’s some pics from last Saturday, whats up with the birds down there what are the woodcock doing. Congratulations on Conway that’s great!
