Long Gone Sam
2x RU. Long Gone Sam, Hall of Famer Verle Farrows
classy white setter male, is one of the cornerstones of
our breeding program. This double grandson of Carl
Duffields great Hall of Famer, Ch. Commanders Hightone Beau has allowed us to infuse and intensify the
gene pool of the great Commander Setters.”Sam”
exemplifies the characteristics attributed to these
tough all age setters, good in the heat, intelligent, and
most importantly, OUTSTANDING BIRD FINDERS.
Long Gone Sam ran on the major All Age circuit, and in some horseback shooting dog events, being successful at both, winning titles in All Age and Shooting Dog Championships, and qualified for the National Championship. While his 26 placements in such fast company is most pleasing, “Sam’s” greatest contribution is undoubtely his production! Long Gone Sam is the sire of four Champions. Ch. Crocketts’ Little Buddy, Ch. Smackwater Jack, Ch. Long Gone Stokely and Ch. Bobby Joe. (see Christmas Centerfold of 1978 American Field for full story and full page picture of this famed Setter)
The last two, Stokely and Bobby Joe have had a major impact on today’s winning Setters, particularly on the wild bird circuit. In 1982 Grouse Ridge Kennels bred a daughter of Ch. Long Gone Stokely to Ch. Bobby Joe, they got a male they called Grouse Ridge Leroy. In 1985 Pete and “Doc” Flanagan allowed us to acquire this handsome male to incorporate these intensified Commander genes of “Roys” into our breeding program. “Leroy’s” blood lit up our pups immediately! Ch. Smoke Rise Buck (sire of 5x Ch. First Rate, and 2x Ch. Thornapple Smoky Belle) Ch. Grouse Ridge Reroy, ( sire of Ch.Powerline Jenny Blue, Ch. Wycoff Run Megan, Ch. Calico’s Furture Force, Ch. Annie Blue Sky ) Ch.Yohos Runaway Bud, R.U.Ch. Class Attack (dam of Ch. Stokelys Al B) and Stonestill Jessie, the all time producer of champions for a setter female. These are just a few of the dozens of winners produced by Leroy.
The quality of the Setters resulting from this blood mix is astounding. “Leroy” himself was a very personable and loving setter, and provided Bernie and myself with many great days afield in pursuit of Grouse and woodcock, we placed him in a few trials, but again, his purpose was fulfilled in his amazing production!
